Something For The Weekend

KATIE ON: Breakin' Convention

Bc_1_4

Q: What do you get when you cross hip hop with graffiti and add a dash of stage theatre in the mix?

A: 'Breakin' Convention 06'.

Yesiree, the UK's ONLY international Hip Hop Dance Theatre Festival is back - a weekend packed full of dance performances, workshops, film screenings, DJ demos from the En4cers, discussions and graffiti art from Solo One and Mr Dane, VOP crew at Sadler's Wells in London.

Now in it's 3rd year, Breakin' Convention is firmly rooted in the UK Hip Hop calender of events. Hosted and curated by Jonzi D, UK Hip Hop pioneer, Breakin' Convention showcases outstanding Hip Hop dance companies from around the world - many performing UK premieres - together with top dance companies from the UK.

It's not just for the street wise and 'cool' though... mainstream theatregoers unite. But, be warned... this one is so popular IT'S SOLD OUT. If you're quick, tickets are still available for the film nights and workshops.

Claire on: a cheeky drink with christian

Christian_and_alex If you fancy livening up your humdrum week then why not go hang out with the cast of One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest including the fine Christian Slater, Alex Kingston (of ER fame amongst much else) and some other actors who are also very cool indeed.

Yes, if you book to see One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest on May 23rd and you will get a glass of wine AND a chance to mingle with the cast thrown in too.

As a little bit of a secret christian lover, this is a very exciting prospect for me. It isn't every day that I get the chance to get up close and personal (well, not that personal but you know what I mean) with the man who floated my boat for most of my early teens....

.... but even if christian isn't your type you will still get the chance to see a totally awesome play and meet some real actor types.. and all for a mere 45 squids. BOOK IT

BECKY ON: perhaps the weekend starts on Wednesday?

Now, I know this is probably wrong, but I've worked HARD all day, I've sent a gazillian emails and I can't even remember how long ago it was that I had my two hour lunch break in the pub over a humumgous cheese and bacon sandwich. (sigh) It's a toughie,... beating those mid-week blues. But hell, everyone knows that Wednesday is almost Thursday, and Thursday's the new FriLogo_1day, so if Saturday is as hungover as Monday after a night out on Sunday, then IT'S ALL SCREWED UP and we may as well start now, right??

Right. which is why, in spite of my minor reservations, I may just take the advice of a switched on alcoholic.. er... colleague, and head to what is essentially a student nig ht, at the Moonlighting nightclub. There's a glorious rumour circulating that it's only 70p for a spirit and mixer and that some beers are a quid. ONE ENGLISH POUND!! Could it be?

We're off to find out. Well, it's all in the name of 'weekend' research. Me and my raging skull will catch you on the flip side...

ALEX ON: Upload

Download This year I have chosen to go to the Download Festival, a weekend of pure rock n' roll! The fact that I heard an industry rumour that the original Guns 'n Roses line-up were playing (just like their legendary Legends of Rock in '88) was the final 'twist of the arm'.  And to get us all in the mood, the lovely organisers of the festival have organised some 'warm up' nights for us to jump around to and meet future camp neighbours (as in camping tent - not feminine characteristics!)

So, if you're off to Download, or haven't quite made your mind up, or if you just like some good music, here are the nights:

APRIL:
Friday 28 LONDON   Sin City @ Electric Ballroom (from 9pm)
Friday 28 LONDON   Rock @ Mean Fiddler (from 11pm)
Friday 28 NEWCASTLE  Legends (from 9pm)
Saturday 29 LIVERPOOL  Krazy House (from 9pm)
Saturday 29 NOTTINGHAM  Distortion @ Rock City (from 9pm)
Saturday 29 SHEFFIELD  The Corporation (from 9:30pm)
Saturday 29 BIRMINGHAM  Subculture @ The Academy (from 9pm)
Saturday 29 MANCHESTER  Jillys (from 9pm)
Saturday 29 WOLVERHAMPTON  Corrosion @ The Civic (from 9:30pm)
Sunday 30 NOTTINGHAM  Distortion Jnr @ The Rig (from 7pm)

MAYRock_hand:
Friday 5 WOLVERHAMPTON  Generation @ The Wulfrun (from 7pm)
Saturday 6 BIRMINGHAM  Teen Culture @ The Academy (from 5pm)
Sunday 7 LONDON   Subverse @ The Underworld (from 2pm)

See you there!

BECKY ON: when art meets vinyl

Like Art? Like Vinyl? Then you might just like Art Vinyl, an exhibition of contemporary cover art from the past ten years.Shop_in_bordered

Some clever so and so's have invented the coollest way of displaying your much loved records, in these flippy-openy things that mount on your walls. FANTASTIC! And miles better than any crappy plastic excuse for a photo frame you can buy from Ikea.

Dan and I strolled into their Broadway Market pad a couple of weeks ago to check out their collection, and were highly excited to learn that not only does the exhibition change every two weeks, they'll also be hosting DJ events on Saturdays so you can listen to the choons as you peruse.

Dust off your records and get them ready to be seen, then head to Art Vinyl's website to buy some SUPER SPECIAL display mounts. And don't forget, Broadway Market on a Saturday is pretty cool anyway, so it's well worth stepping into Art Vinyl for a squiz when you've stocked up on cheese, and,... er... coffee, and, well,... more cheese....

dancing on the water...

Maybe it’s juGrooupst me, but whenever I hear the word ‘disco’ I step right back to year six at St John’s Primary, when Ian Smith bought me a Kit Kat and tried to kiss me in the cricket bat cupboard. Those junior ‘gym hall’ discos may have left a scar, but add a water element that doesn’t involve chucking your Ribena over a passionate nine year old and you’ll be surprised at how your opinions can change.

On Saturday night, some equally wary friends and I donned our glad-rags (minus the pigtails and puffball skirts) and headed to Westminster Pier to board the Thames Riverboat Disco Cruise…

Luckily for us, it was a gorgeous Spring evening as we walked the plank (ahem) and settled into our seats on the brand spanking new MV Erasmus.  We made sure we were close to one of its two bars and the buffet table, naturally, and slowly but surely the ship filled up with equally optimistic dancing divas.  We were a little surprised at the 29 strong hen party, complete with pink feather boas and L plates, but we didn’t really have to stare at them for very long – there was too much of our lovely London to look at outEye  of the windows.

Lucy, Kate, Sarah and I sipped our way through three bottles of wine as we watched Canary Wharf, the London Eye, Tower Bridge and the mighty Barrier glide by.  Our chicken and pasta dinner was basic fodder but welcomed in light of the alcohol consumption, and as the hours passed and London faded into darkness through the windows, we climbed upstairs and joined the ladies in “hen night heaven”. Sarah couldn’t believe the sight as one of them wrapped herself Djaround a pole and promptly fell on the floor: “imagine a Shameless wedding reception”.  But to be honest, it didn’t take long before we were shaking it up with the rest of them.  We even smoked a cigar. Well,... you have to on a ship, don’t you?

The DJ didn’t seem to own any music post 1999, but still, he played all the essential disco classics, from Gloria Gaynor to those Uni faves from Five. Everybody GET UP!  The staff kept the whole place clean and constantly collected glasses, and it wasn’t even a hassle (or that expensive) to get served at the bar.  As we sailed under Tower Bridge on our way back to Westminster, most of us gathered on the deck to take photos and toast to the sights of our fabulous city.

In fact, standing out there, sipping cheap wine with the wind rushing through my hair, listening to Disco Inferno making waves inside, I couldn’t help but think that had Ian Smith been there then with his pathetic Kit Kat offerings, I would have flung it into the Thames and kissed him anyway. What the hell!

It might not be the classiest night out you’ll ever have, but for a group of girls looking for some classic London fun, what could be better than hitting the Thames and dancing it up until midnight? Better not ask the bride to be – last seen covered in pasta sauce, shooting tequilas. - By Becky Wicks

on yer bike (for charity)

BikeFeeling bad coz you didn't sponsor anyone for the Marathon at the weekend?

Now's your chance to make up for it, by sponsoring my mate Jen, who is taking a hardcore bike ride THIS WEEKEND for a cool charity called Friends of the Elderly. WHY? Because she's nice, and because old people rock. Basically.

Now, her lil butt is gonna get very sore cycling 186 miles. She's raised £124 and needs to raise £325, so dig deep folks and sponsor Jen's ass here!!

BECKY ON: right up the jaxxy

A friend informed me yesterday that Basement Jaxx do a secret DJ set most Friday nightBasement_jaxx_lgs in Brixton at a place called Jamm. I looked on the website and IT'S TRUE! They're on tonight from 9pm til 4am and it's only £6. I'm sure you'll have to line up, but it's looking good folks. Check it out HERE

If you go, let us know what they're like... I think they play there a lot but it looks like they have a lot of other great stuff on too. Our fave resident band Keiretsu are playing there next week (Friday 28th) supporting the Guillemots and Polar Bear. HOT!!!

Alex on: Pole Axed

Katemosspole I have a friend who is a DJ, and a good one at that.  His particular flavour of music is electric/gothness kinda stuff.  Although he is a self confessed "demi goth" as according to him, he likes the sun too much!  And this good friend of mine is DJing at a club tonight, and so being the great friend i am, i'm off to watch him (the fact he got me on the guest list has nothing to do with it - honest!).  However, this is no ordinary night, no, this is Synthetic Culture at The Egg Club in Kings Cross.  It occurs every third Friday of the month, and is tucked away behind Kings Cross station (up York Road - check the link!).  And it has been described to me as "a dirty goth and rock night, with the plus side being they have pole dancers!"  Hang on. A rock night, with barely clothed, covorting ladies, dangling from a pole? Could it get any better? Good music, good girls, good god!  Ever since Kate Moss pole danced for The White Stripes, rock and pole dancers seemed to have a new found friendship (although i'm sure the likes of Jagger, Ozzy and Rod found this out ages ago!) There's only 1 way this place could get any better - if the pole dancers made me a nice cup of tea near the end of the night.  Then my friend i will be in heaven!

So if you fancy listening to great music, jumping up and down like a mad hatter and having the wonderful view of beautiful women dancing semi naked for your pleasure, come join me! I'll be the guy with the huge grin on his face!
