We've heard mention the mythical "summer season", but what is it? Can you get involved if you don't own your own horse, have a knight of the realm in your family or have more have more than 16 bathrooms in your house? We decided to take on the challenge of deciphering the season and finding ways to join in
So what events are traditionally counted as part of the season.Debrett’s the peerage guide lists the following events:
Edinburgh Fringe
Glyndebourne
The Proms
Royal Academy Summer Exhibition
The Chelsea Flower Show
Royal Ascot
Glorious Goodwood
Badminton
The Grand National
The Royal Windsor Horse Show
Trooping the Colour
The Garter Service
The Boat Race
Henley Royal Regatta
Wimbledon
Cowes Week
The Lord's Test Match
Remember it's not all Pimms, cucumber sandwiches and jolly hockey sticks. Many of the events have a strict dress code and require booking tickets in advance. Take Henley as an example.
The Henley royal regatta takes place over 5 days in July with the final races starting over the weekend. You can bring your own drinks if you want to sit on the river but many of the main drinking enclosures (such as the stewards) require you to bring in advance. Guides on dress codes are available on all the event websites but as a general rule guys tend to need a tie, collared shirt, trousers and shoes ; girls tend to have to wear a hat (or adequate fascinator), knee length skirt or dress (no shorts/trousers) and proper shoes (no flip flops or ballet pumps). It's also worth noting that places such as Royal Ascot don't allow spaghetti straps or halter necks.
Even when attending free events such as Trooping the colour, it's worth adhering to the dress code in case you manage to sneak into the main arenas.
If you aren't luck enough to get tickets for Wimbledon (or don't want to dress up) then we've got a great deal going on a the sports cafes across the UK that can help you watch the matches in comfort.
