Canada Day, Eh?
Okay, so even if all Canadians don’t insert the fabled ‘eh?’ into every
spoken sentence it doesn’t mean that you can’t try to do it on Canada
Day. There are plenty of other ways to soak up Canadian culture as well
.
- Recreation
Get out there during the day and try your hand in Canadian sports. A 1994 act of parliament made hockey and lacrosse the national sports of Canada. Just find some of the simple equipment and a nice yard or garden and you’ll be ready to get your game on like the Canadians do… Almost. (Hopefully you can’t find any ice-covered lakes this summer!) Play until the sun goes down and then look for some fireworks afterwards. They’re essential to any authentic Canada Day celebration.
- Food and Drink
Go out in search of Canadian cuisine; it has a bit for everyone. Seafood lovers can order Atlantic classics like fish chowder or baked lobster, or they can opt for some poached salmon from the Pacific side. Vegetarians can look out for native favourites like corn casserole or the famed ‘poutine’ dish. Other delicious Canadian entrees include maple glazed chicken, smoked ham, or the French Canadian classic, ‘tourtiere.’ You can wash down these unique dishes with any of the popular brews by Molson or Labatt, but if you want to go that extra mile and drink like a real Canadian then you should try to find Canadian favourites like Moosehead Lager or Alexander Keith’s India Pale Ale. Finally, satisfy your sweet tooth with traditional Canadian desserts like Nanaimo bars or maple sugar pie.
- Music
Finally relax with some authentic Canadian tunes. No, you don’t have to listen to Bryan Adams, Celine Dion, or Alanis Morissette again. (Even though you know deep down that you really want to.) Canada’s music scene consists of more than just a few international superstars. Try something new! Pop in an album by Our Lady Peace if you enjoy grunge, Tragically Hip if you’re into hard rock, or Rheostatics to hear that indie sound.
And remember, enjoy Canada Day responsibly, eh?
