“Lee looks like a Hobbit” was just one of the many opinions that popped into our Grease vs Joseph inbox when we asked what people think about the current, raging battle of theatrics. It’s a ratings war that’s gripped the nation – a television search for the future stars of two of our best-loved musicals – Joseph and the Amazing Technicoloured Dreamcoat, and Grease. But no matter which one you’ve been following (or both if you’ve been recycling the old VHS tapes) - on Saturday, Britain will finally crown its very own Joseph, Danny and Sandy. And only time will tell whether the chosen few can tread the boards before millions, as well as that makeshift studio stage before his Lloydship and celebs of mountainously high esteem such as… Sinitta?
Here’s the word on the street:
ON JOSEPH:
“Lee must be the winner…. he has the haircut of a West End Star. That perm must cost a fortune….oh yes and he can sing and dance, although his body self obsession and constant meat eating is a touch over the top. Oh those creative types are so extreme.”
“Keith will be the runner up…. He’s guaranteed the Scottish vote which is a powerful force in TV voting these day. Looks far too young though - when he dances with those “sexy” JOSEPHETES it simply does not work. Looks like he is a child that has managed to get a date with Mrs Robinson, and Mrs Robinsons does not look so pleased!”
“Lewis will be the first to fall. He is almost from the land of Billy Elliot, although my feeling is he lacks Billy’s grit and talent. Mind you, the fact he is still alive having chosen to do dance as a child and lives in Middlesbrough makes him my spiritual winner. I guess he can probably run fast!” – Simon Thompson
“Who needs a real social life when one can just live vicariously through tv people!
I have to say that Joseph is by far the best - the Grease one is rubbish and that Lloyd Webber seems to have a repertoire of fascinating/terrifying facial expressions. I have loved musicals since I was little and am rejoicing in the fact that they are now(semi) cool!
And next they should do west side story...I’d love that.” – Susie Bould
ON GREASE:
“I’ve only been watching Grease lately…the winner has to be Anthony aka Kavanah – he’s luuurvvly and all the ladies love him, although the other guy can sing better.
And the blonde girl has to win a) because she’s blonde b) because she can sing and c) because the other
one is too much like Maria (from How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria)
- Alexa Jeggo
ON ANNOYANCE:
“I think these are the two most inane shows on TV at the minute. And completely pointless.
Resurrecting two old musicals and turning them into an X Factor contest just goes to show that programme makers are scraping the barrel for ideas.
Loincloths or leather jackets? I’d choose polyester any day.” - Adam Walker
“I reckon that these shows can't be doing too much harm to the theatre industry. I would imagine there will be a short spike of interest from people who watch the show and then it’ll die down again. I would also imagine that there are theatre purists who sneer at any dumbing-down, despite the wider attention their beloved interest must gather.” – Jim Blower
“I think these shows are great as they make performing in the West End accessible to everyone, whereas beforehand it was next to impossible. On the other hand- I do think they are taking away the fact that people want to see live Theatre - not a television star.. which kind of demotes the whole point of Theatre really.” - Sophia Port
“I think [these shows] are obviously benefiting theatre sales as the theatre is reaching a far wider and broader spectrum of people. The idea of going is just like going to see a Leona Lewis or another winner of a reality TV talent show… only you see a production as well as seeing somebody famous you have followed on TV.
The only concern is if this continues, will theatre be perceived as a lesser experience to all those hardcore theatre goers? It may cheapen the experience in some peoples eyes." - Andrew Newton
ON FAMOUS FRIENDS:
“Danny B needs to win Grease ‘cause he's my friend!!! Plus he makes the best Danny and already has the name! Go Danny!!!” – Sophia Port
ON NONSENSE:
“I think Joseph should win purely because of the way it handled the incident with the electric dogs. They also score bonus points for collaborating to carve a school for the blind out of the living rock using only tiny butter knives. Granted, Grease managed to resurrect the body of George Peppard by a combination of animatronics and voodoo, then forced him to dance to boogie woogie piano tunes - but they lost a lot of respect when Voodoo George ran amok in the nearby lemonade factory, contaminating 70% of the batches, scaring the women and making the fizz smell like eggs.
OK, I admit it, I haven't watched any of them”. - Ric Bradley
Lee may look like a hobbit but he's still sexier and more talented than most men on telly. WE NEED LEE MEAD - WE NEED LEE MEAD- WE NEED LEE MEAD - Get the gist.
