Fat Pig, Trafalgar Studios London, 16 May - 6 September
Have you ever been embarrassed to be seen out with someone you’re dating? Received a beating from your mates because your new paramour looks a bit, well, different? The questions this predicament raises about where personal insecurity ends and society’s prejudices begin are all explored in Neil LaBute’s short, sharp shock of a play.
When Tom (Peep Show’s Robert Webb) meets the pretty and sexy (and large) Helen, sparks fly and Tom quickly realises he has a connection that goes deeper than any he’s had before, particularly in contrast to the relationship he has with his vain, nagging ex and colleague, Jeannie (Joanna Page, or Stacey from Gavin And…). The trouble is, he knows when Jeannie and fellow office drone and permanent cocky pain in the arse, Carter, find out about his overweight love, they’re going to make his life a living hell.
Vibrantly played by the talented celeb cast, Fat Pig revels in its shot-gun one-liners, particularly from the excruciating Carter (played maniacally well by Kriss Marshall, previously of those annoying BT ads), and yet has a dark heart, full of sinister moments of crushing psychosis from all four characters. The American accents waver occasionally, but it remains a telling parable of modern day romance and an acute observation of office politics and thirty-something peer pressure.
